Learning about Firefighters

Last week, our son’s class went to visit the firefighter station in our small city. We’ve had a lot of activities outside school and I really find it good for the kids. Their teacher has been very supportive about learning experiences not confined in the classroom so the kids get to see the actual things and not only as pictures in a book. The staff at the fire station were also friendly…the kids enjoyed it there.

First, the kids were taught what firefighters do, how they do it and how important they are in a community. They were then allowed to try on the firefighting gear – complete with helmet and bunking gear (turnout jackets and pants), flashlights and other stuff of a firefighting kit…it was fun even though their big on them.
Lastly, the kids got to experience a real firepole! They were really excited and giggling after sliding down. Such experiences could instill in them the want to become firefighters themselves. Let’s see…
We visited other places last week, will show them next.
